Blues City Cafe
About this place
Blues City Cafe opened on Beale Street in March 1991 under a different name, Doe's Eat Place, as a Memphis outpost of the Greenville, Mississippi restaurant started by Charles and Dominic "Doe" Signa. In October 1993 investors bought the place and renamed it Blues City Cafe. The building at 138 Beale Street has been a fixture of the street ever since.
From steaks to ribs
At first it was a steak joint, run by chef Bonnie Mack. Then one night the kitchen featured ribs, and almost overnight it became a ribs place. Ribs remain the focus, with fall-off-the-bone meat, and the menu has grown to include steaks, tamales and catfish. The baby catfish fillets are lightly breaded in seasoned cornmeal and deep fried, and the chef also makes a well-regarded gumbo.
Music on the walls and on the stage
The decor blends blues and country music, with walls covered in memorabilia and vintage photographs, and live performances give the room an energy that matches Beale Street outside. The cafe was built to serve locals, tourists and everyone in between, which explains why the menu is straightforward and consistent.
When to go
Hours run late, until 1 AM Sunday through Thursday and until 3 AM on Friday and Saturday, so it works for a late meal after a show as well as for a lunch stop.
